  • Choose an non identifiable, non gender specific screen name (and keep it clean!)
  • Never give out any personal information whilst chatting online . That means your real name, telephone or cell phone number[s], mailing address, passwords, banking details etc. Ignore requests for personal information like A/S/L and be vague with responses to questions like WITW.
  • Never accept files or downloads from people you don't know or from people you do know, if you weren‘t expecting them. This includes URLs.
  • Never arrange to meet someone offline that you only know through chat room conversations.
  • Make sure you know how to save copies of your chat room conversations.
  • Make sure you now how to report problems to the chat room moderator.

Internet, an interconnection of millions of computers all over the world, is a great attraction among youth today.
It is becoming more accessible at home since many parents try to acquire computer unit to comply with their children’s requirement in school. Internet is now part of the curriculum of our educational system from elementary to college Young people are adept in using them than their parents and elders.

Every school tries to have Internet connection so that all students can get a hands-on practicum. They are taught how to access and surf the Internet.
Another place where the youth can get Internet connection is cyber-café, a center where many computer units are publicly available for a fee. Cyber-cafes are mostly located near the school zone so that students can access anytime during school days.
During a Media Education Seminar, eighty high school students were asked about their favorite media. The overwhelming answer was Internet. It came as a surprise since the common perception is television as the favorite medium of the youth. This could be an indicator that they are shifting to Internet having discovered its many attractive features.

With the recent boom of the internet, one thing that has become a whole lot popular is the concept of online chat. However, the concept of online chat has really evolved from what it used to be. Chat used to be IRC and rooms on different internet sites with little more functionality than being able to type in something and then have that something appear in the chat room. And while a lot of people enjoyed that and in the case of IRC still enjoy it, many others thirsted for more.

Online chat can refer to any kind of communication over the Internet, but is primarily meant to refer to direct one-on-one chat or text-based group chat (formally also known as synchronous conferencing), using tools such as instant messengers, Internet Relay Chat, talkers and possibly MUDs. Internet Relay Chat

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message, as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client.
IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen in late August 1988 to replace a program called MUT (MultiUser talk) on a BBS called OuluBox in Finland. Oikarinen found inspiration in a chat system known as Bitnet Relay, which operated on the BITNET
IRC was used to report on the Soviet coup attempt of 1991 throughout a media blackout. It was previously used in a similar fashion during the Iraqi invasion. Logs of these events, and other events, are kept in the ibiblio archive.
IRC client software is available for virtually every computer operating system.
